Markman Precision Multigrafting

NHI does not endorse the use of this instrument.

The Markman device in use.
This is a hand held, manually powered device that can transplant up to 70 micro-minigrafts at the same time. The grafts are loaded into a cartridge that is then inserted into an instrument that contains a grid of needle-like hollow tubes. The device then makes all of the recipient sites at the same time and simultaneously pushes the grafts into the holes.

The problems with Precision Multigrafting are numerous. First of all, since the grafts are inserted simultaneously from a rigid grid, and the human scalp is curved, the insertion process is far from precise (as the name "Precision" misleadingly implies). Second, the fixed grid is not able to match the angle of the emerging hair or the subtle directional changes that are so critical in having the transplant look natural. Third, the instrument is not able to adjust in areas where there is existing hair.

Finally, Precision Multigrafting relies on a "Graft Cutter" to generate the mini-micrografts needed to load the instrument. Therefore, it has all the transection problems inherent in "Blind Graft Dissecting" techniques (see section on Graft Cutters above)

In our opinion, Precision Multigrafting represents the worst of both worlds. It lacks the aesthetic flexibility and control of individual graft insertion (the Multigrafter) and uses a technique of graft preparation that destroys follicular units and transects follicles (the Graft Cutter). We advise that anyone considering this technique to observe these instruments in action before going forward.
