Automated Devices
Automation promises to play an important role in the future of hair restoration surgery. The main goals of automation are:
EFFICIENCY
- Shorter surgical time
- Smaller staff
- Less expensive procedure
|
QUALITY
- Better quality
- Easier quality control
|
The greatest danger of automation is that a shorter surgical time, reduced staff and decreased cost will be achieved at the expense of quality. This issue is so important that we have chosen to divide automated devices into two categories.
In the first group there is greater efficiency (in terms of time and staffing) and also better quality. These include:
In the second group, there is greater efficiency at the expense of quality. NHI does not endorse the use of these instruments:
NHI has always made improving quality a primary goal in the development of all of our instruments and automated devices. Although, shortening the surgical time and decreasing cost are important, quality should never be compromised. By "quality," we mean achieving the maximum cosmetic benefit from the procedure and getting the most out of the patient's finite donor supply by not wasting or damaging donor hair.
Many patients ask us if they should wait for new developments in technology before having a hair transplant. To answer this question, one needs to understand NHI's motivation in developing automated devices. NHI has arguably the largest and most highly trained staff performing Follicular Unit Transplantation in the world. Our primary goal in developing automation is to allow other doctors with more limited resources to offer procedures similar to ours.
Follicular Unit Transplantation is an exacting, labor intensive process. Automation will have a far greater impact on doctors less skilled in our procedure than at NHI, where large sessions are routine and quality control is an obsession. Although technologic advances will continue, you can be sure that every hair transplant at NHI will be performed without compromise.
Since its inception, the physicians at the New Hair Institute have been dedicated to providing the best possible care for our patients. This is our primary goal. Although, NHI has been, and continues to be, a world leader in developing cutting-edge hair transplant technology, not every good idea can, or should, be generated from our institution.
Over the years, NHI has continually incorporated the best ideas and innovations from around the world to enhance our Follicular Unit Transplantation procedure. But, we will never use a procedure, or technique, simply because it is our own. Our patients can be assured that we will implement every new medical and surgical advance that can improve patient care, regardless of its origin.
