Introduction
Heather, a 33 year-old registered nurse and aspiring actress, came to NHI and Dr. Rassman with typical female hair loss. Heather started to lose her hair at age 25 and her condition deteriorated soon after. The goal of her procedure was to create a style for Heather that would be realistic considering her severe hair loss and limited donor supply. Heather had a strong hairline but lacked fullness on the top of her head.
ABC's television program Extreme Makeover filmed Heather's transformation on July 20th, 2004 at our Los Angeles office and aired the program October 14th, 2004. This was Extreme Makeover's first female transplant, so they chose Dr. Rassman and NHI to assure she would be in good hands. Dr. Rassman's work was complimented by plastic surgery, eye surgery, cosmetic dentistry, styling, and personal training; at the end of all her hard work, the old tired Heather was unrecognizable. Like most hair transplant results, Heathers' would not be visible for 8-12 months, so Extreme Makeover fit her with a wig for her unveiling.
Dr. Rassman was able to provide Heather with something that she hasn't had in years, a foundation for styling her real hair. After 1,620 follicular unit grafts, Heather is on her way to ridding her hair pieces and wigs once and for all.
Initial Consultation (July 7, 2004)
Heather and Dr. Rassman met to set realistic goals for her procedure. Although he was excited about her transformation, Dr. Rassman was careful to explain to Heather the pros and cons of transplanting a female with hair loss. Specifically, they discussed a style that Heather would feel comfortable with, focusing on a strong central part and a re-enforced hairline to better frame her face.
Procedure (July 20, 2004)
Similar to Jerry's procedure (NHI's first Extreme Makeover Patient), Heather underwent NHI's (and the world's) gold standard, Follicular Unit Transplantation. She laughed most of the way through, fitting her care free nature and positive attitude. After years of being made fun of, she could finally take a deep breath of relief that she had something done about it. Only a few hours later, Heather walked out of NHI with a new start.
